The best paver sealer for your pavers will depend on several factors including the type of paver you are trying to seal, what your paver is currently sealed with, and what you want your pavers to look like once sealed. Type of Paver
If you have a concrete paver, you are free to use a penetrating sealer or an acrylic sealer. If you have a red clay brick or clay brick paver, you want to use a penetrating paver sealer and avoid the use of an acrylic sealer. Acrylic sealers aren't designed for use on clay pavers and have a high failure rate.
Paver Sealers for Sealed Pavers
If your pavers are currently sealed, you want to make sure that the paver sealer you use to reseal is compatible.
- Silane-Siloxane: If your pavers are currently sealed with a Silane-Siloxane sealer you can reseal with a Silane-Siloxane sealer (so long as water no longer beads) or a solvent-based acrylic sealer. If you want to use a water-based acrylic sealer, please contact a technician first so that we can instruct you on how to run a few tests.
- Water-Based Acrylic Sealer: If your pavers are currently sealed with a water-based acrylic sealer then you want to reseal with a water-based acrylic sealer. Popular choices are the Armor WB15 for a low gloss and the Armor WB25 for a high gloss.
- Solvent-Based Acrylic Sealer: If your pavers are currently sealed with a solvent-based acrylic sealer then you want to reseal with a solvent-based acrylic sealer. Popular choices are the Armor AR350 for a low gloss or Armor AR500 for a high gloss.
Paver Sealers for Unsealed Pavers
If your pavers are currently unsealed, you are able to seal your pavers with the sealer of your choice. Which sealer is best for your pavers will depend on what you want your pavers to look like once sealed.
- Natural, Unsealed Look: If your pavers are currently unsealed and you want to maintain the natural, unsealed look of the pavers then you want a water repellent sealer like the Armor SX5000 or the Armor SX5000 WB. These sealers work entirely below the surface to reduce the absorption of water, therefore reducing damage and deterioration caused by water absorption. They will not leave a visible film or coating and can last for up to 7-10 years.
- Slight Color Enhancement, No Gloss: If you want a very slight color enhancement, but don't want to maintain a film or coating, the Armor WL550 is a great choice. It behaves much like a Silane-Siloxane, the primary difference being that it also slightly enhances the natural color of the pavers.
- Low to High Gloss, Minimal Color Change: If you like the color of your pavers but want a low to high gloss finish, then you want a water-based acrylic sealer. Water-based acrylic sealers will provide a protective gloss finish that can last for up to 1-3 years. Acrylic sealers are designed to reduce damage and deterioration caused by water, surface abrasion, and foot and vehicle traffic. The Armor WB15 is great if you want a low gloss finish and the Armor WB25 is great if you want a high gloss finish.
- Low to High Gloss, Dramatic Color Enhancement: If you want to darken the color of your pavers to give them a similar appearance to being wet, and you want to add a protect gloss finish, then you want a solvent-based acrylic sealer. Solvent-based acrylic sealers will dramatically enhance the color of the pavers and provide a protective gloss finish that can last for up to 1-3 years. Acrylic sealers are designed to reduce damage and deterioration caused by water, surface abrasion, and foot and vehicle traffic. The Armor AR350 is great if you want a low gloss finish and the Armor AR500 is great if you want a high gloss finish.
