Best Solvent-Based Penetrating Paver Sealer for a Matte Wet Look

The Armor WL550 is the best sealer for your pavers if you are looking to very slightly darken the color of the pavers without leaving a visible surface film.

Benefits:

  • Professional-Grade: The Armor WL550 is made with high-quality US-manufactured non-recycled resins, and is designed to out-last and out-perform.
  • Color Enhancement Without The Gloss: The Armor WL550 is a penetrating sealer and it won't leave a visible surface film or coating. It is designed to work entirely below the surface while very slightly darkening the color of the pavers.
  • Long Lasting Protection: The Armor WL550 chemically reacts below the surface to form a water-repellent barrier that can last for up to 5-7 years. By reducing the absorption of water on the surface, damage caused by water absorption is also reduced. Surfaces sealed with the Armor WL550 are more resistant to damage caused by water absorption such as cracking, spalling, ice damage, salt damage, organic surface growth, and staining.
  • Ready to Use: The Armor WL550 can be applied to a properly cleaned and prepped unsealed surface with a solvent-resistant pump sprayer. One gallon covers up to 175-225 square feet in one coat.
  • Easy To Maintain: The Armor WL550 is easy to use and easy to maintain. When it is time to reseal, simply apply a single coat of the concrete sealer to a clean and dry surface with a solvent-resistant pump sprayer.
  • Versatile: The Armor WL550 can be used on a variety of unsealed exterior surfaces including paver driveways, paver walkways, paver patios, paver pool decks, and more! It can also be used to seal concrete, brick, and natural stone.
Application

Surface Preparation:

The Armor WL550 should be applied to a completely clean and dry surface. If the surface was cleaned with water or pressure washed prior to application, allow the surface to dry for at least 24 hours before sealing. While the surface may appear dry and feel dry to touch, water below the surface trapped in the pores can cause the same issues. While pressure washing the surface is typically sufficient, spot treatment may be necessary for deep or older stains. If the surface is smooth troweled, or does not easily accept water, acid etching may be required prior to applying sealer. It is always suggested to apply the Armor WL550 to a test area to verify absorption, coverage, compatibility, and project suitability.

The Armor WL550 is designed specifically for unsealed concrete and masonry surfaces. Do not apply this product over a surface recently sealed with a water repellent sealer, or previously sealed with a film-forming sealer or coating.

Application:

A solvent resistant commercial pump sprayer is recommend to achieve best coverage and results. Be sure the psi is no greater than 20. Use a .3-.5 GPM adjustable cone tip.

Apply the first coat of Armor WL550, ensuring the entire surface is evenly saturated. Broom out puddles until surface is penetrated. In most cases, a single coat is needed. For porous substrates, or if you notice an inconsistent wet look, a second coat can be applied. The second coat can be applied while the first coat is still wet, or after surface appears dry.

Substrates sealed with Armor WL550 may be coated with a solvent based acrylic sealer once the surface has had 72 hours to dry.

Time of Day

The temperature of the air and surface must be 55-85 degrees F during application. If freezing conditions exist prior to application, it is highly recommended that the substrate be allowed to fully thaw. Should this recommendation not be followed, the product may not yield adequate protective properties.

Once applied, the surface should be kept dry for at least 24 hours.

Non-Slip Additives

The Armor WL550 is a penetrating sealer and works entirely below the surface. Non-Slip additives CAN’T be added to this product because there isn’t a surface film for the non-slip additive to be suspended into. Penetrating sealers will not change the surface traction of the concrete, brick, natural stone or pavers – the surface will feel exactly as it felt before being sealed.

Clean-Up

Use xylene or acetone. Dispose of containers in accordance with local and federal regulations.

Product Removal

Armor WL550 penetrates deep into to the surface. Removal is not recommended.

Coverage

Porous Surfaces: Up to 175 square feet per gallon in one coat.

Smooth Surfaces (once properly prepped): Up to 200-225 square feet per gallon in one coat.

Coverage will vary depending on porosity, surface condition, application method, and the amount of material applied by the applicator. The above coverage rates are estimates and will vary. Two coats are suggested for even coverage and appearance. Please note, less porous surfaces, such as bluestone, flagstone, and slate may only require one coat.

The Armor WL550 is designed specifically to be used on unsealed concrete, brick, natural stone, and masonry. The Armor WL550 can’t be applied over any existing sealers, paints, or coatings.

FAQs

What is the difference between the Armor SX5000/SX5000 WB and the Armor WL550?

The Armor SX5000/SX5000 WB and the Armor WL550 offer very similar performance benefits. One of the main differences is that the Armor SX5000/Armor SX5000 WB will not change the color of the pavers, but the Armor WL550 will.

Does this leave a gloss?

No. The Armor WL550 works entirely below the surface and won't leave a visible surface film or coating.

Is it slippery when wet?

The Armor WL550 does not change the surface traction of the pavers because it doesn't leave a surface film or coating.

How long does it last?

The Armor WL550 can last for up to 5-7 years before the need to recoat. It is ok to re-apply sooner so long as the pavers are able to easily accept water and water no longer beads.

How long does the bead effect last?

Surface water beading will not occur on all surfaces. While some surfaces may experience an instantaneous bead, others won’t experience a surface water bead at all. Surface water beading is not a sealer benefit. Surface water bead is caused from resin build-up on the surface. Once the resin build-up goes away, so will the bead. The Armor WL550 is designed to work entirely below the surface so its benefits are made visible through performance. You will find sealed surfaces dry faster, are easier to clean, and experience less damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts.

How many coats should I apply?

Most porous paver surfaces will require 2-3 coats, but some surfaces, such as natural stone, may only require one coat. It is important to apply a product sample to a test area to verify look, coverage, and compatibility.
